Research and Development

Within the community of Duluth, MN, people with disabilities are finding themselves tirelessly justifying their needs and explaining themselves to others. Uninvited questions and misconceptions can lead a person, with the disability, feeling great amounts of emotional stress. I conducted research and interviewed people, giving me the understanding of how the public treats people who are differently abled, why it happens, and how it affects them. After finalizing my research, I designed a handout that offered a solution. I compiled my research, branding, the final hand out design and mockups into a book.

Hand out solution

Out of Spoons is a brand that offers a customizable, business card sized, hand out that anyone with a disability can be ready to hand out when they do not have time or energy to explain themselves. The trifold business cards offer a concise message covering Spoon Theory on one panel and how they can receive answers to their questions on another. The final panel incorporates a short excerpt on how an able-bodied/ able minded person can practice mindfulness when asking questions or reacting to someone with a disability.
